Its subsistence economy is based mainly on rice. The colony of Portuguese Guinea was created in 1879. Failing to secure reform by peaceful means, the PAIGC movement mounted a liberation war (1961–74). Independence was proclaimed in 1973 and recognized by Portugal in 1974. Multi-party politics were introduced in 1991.</span></text>
